Today’s Scripture
“I hurt with the hurt of my people. I mourn and am overcome with grief” (Jeremiah 8:21).
Jeremiah has been called “The Weeping Prophet” because he so identified through tears the plight of God’s people throughout Judah and Jerusalem up to and including the time of the exile. And over half a century later another great Man was to come and would weep yet again over the same Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). Read these words today as if God Himself is speaking. See the grief that God expresses in a rare and uncut display of emotion. “My grief is beyond healing… my heart is broken…”
Judah had strongholds, idols and compromise. Even today, it’s likely that we all have some sort of stronghold we cling to (and would be so much better off if we gave up!). This is what caused the tears of God. What stronghold do you refuse to give up that causes Jesus to weep over you?
