Today’s Scripture
“Let us live in awe of the Lord” (Jeremiah 5:24).
Many of us use the term “awesome” quite casually in everyday life. We use it to denote something spectacular, of extreme goodness and/or denoting excitement; however, the original Hebrew meaning denotes something quite different. In fact, today’s use of this word has diluted its original meaning.
In churches today, it is quite common to hear about the goodness and mercy of the Lord. These attributes are quite true; however, our God is also an “awesome” God. When was the last time you considered His power, majesty and might? To live in awe of our God means to understand and respond to Him in His fullness and the only appropriate response is a holy, reverent fear. We can easily accept that He is “good” and “merciful,” but when was the last time you stood in “awe” (reverent fear) of the Lord your God?
