Today’s Scripture
“The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears crying, ‘O my son… If only I had died instead of you!'” (2 Samuel 18:33).
Positioned for war, we see father and son on opposite sides in an age-old battle for the kingship. One propelled in pride, the other in purpose. It is clear among all the people, having displayed their loyalty, which side they are on. And God, in His sovereignty, allows these events to happen. In an unexpected and untimely twist, Absalom’s hair gets caught in a tree, ripping him off his donkey and leaving him dangling helpless in wait. As you might expect, David’s mighty men were quick to react and plunged their daggers into his heart.
David’s response was of grief and sadness! This was his son! In a display of grief that could only parallel that of the heart of a father toward his son, we wonder if the Father God felt similar emotions when His Son, Jesus, chose to die as the ultimate sacrifice for our own sins.
