Today’s Scripture
“You won’t make a house for me… I (God) will make a house for you” (2 Samuel 7:11).
In our reading today, God makes a covenant with David. It is rightly called, “The Davidic Covenant.” In it, God promises to make his name famous, provide a homeland for Israel, give them rest from their enemies and to secure David’s dynasty forever (his descendants will forever be a king of Israel). What a promise!
The Davidic Covenant is the source of the Messianic hope for Israel (and for us) and was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus was the one whom God raised up to make the kingdom strong and whose kingdom will continue forever. Even the angel Gabriel connected the promise to Mary’s unborn child in saying, “He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. God will give him the throne of David and He will reign over Israel forever.” Glory to God that the Messiah has come to rule a kingdom in righteousness without end!
